Over a course of five days, the 2021 South club reeled off nine consecutive victories to win the Black Bear Classic put on by Prospect Select. This event featured 125 clubs in the 16U division and 90 in the 18U bracket. In pool play, the Canes went 4-0 and defeated the opposition by a combined score of 22-4.
To open the playoffs, the Canes opened play with a 9-0 victory behind a strong outing from 2021 LHP Wyatt Evans (JL Mann, SC). In the second round, the Canes found themselves down 9-6 in the final inning, but an offensive explosion capped off with a walk-off single off the stick of Kennedy Jones pushed the Canes to the final day of competition.
In the quarterfinals contest, Tyler Overholt (Abbeville, SC/CofC commit) twirled a gem through seven frames but the score was tied 1-1. In the home half of the seventh, the Canes struck gold once again as Caleb Oakley ignited the offense with a one out double to help propel the Canes to a 2-1 victory.
Moving to the game two of the day, the Canes found themselves in a hole once again in the bottom of the sixth by a score of 4-2. After a 90-minute rain delay, the offense exploded for eighth runs and punch their ticket to the finals with a 10-4 victory.
In the championship game and the club’s third game of the day, the Canes found themselves in an early hole after surrendering three runs in the top of the first. 2021 South responded with a three-run blast off the bat of 2021 INF David Lewis (Blue Ridge, SC/Clemson commit). In a back and forth affair all evening the score was knotted at five after seven complete. In the top of the eighth, the Canes gave up two runs to find themselves in a hole once again going into the final frame. With the bases loaded, 2021 INF/RHP Daniel Brooks (Bishop England, SC) roped a ball in to the left center field gap to give 2021 South their fourth straight comeback win in the event.
Along with hoisting the tournament trophy, 2021 OF/1B Kennedy Jones (Maury, VA) was awarded tournament MVP.
