Canes-Gallaher completed a remarkable fall season with a perfect 6-0 run through the USSSA Beast of the East tournament in Charlotte. After going 2-0 in pool play on Saturday and earning the second overall seed, the schedule required the Canes to play four games on Sunday, beginning at 8 a.m. in chilly Matthews. With two of the 12 rostered players limited by injury, they proceeded to defeat a quartet of talented opponents, capped with an epic championship game victory.
After a 4-3 win in the quarterfinals and a 5-3 victory in the semifinals, Canes-Gallaher traveled to Independence High for a title game that ended 23-15. The team banged out 18 hits in four-plus offensive innings in the championship win. Every available player reached base in the title game and every starter scored at least one run.
The slugfest in the championship game overshadowed a terrific pitching performance throughout the tournament. Canes-Gallaher utilized eight pitchers in bracket play alone, and nine overall for the weekend. They paired that pitching with terrific defense, with multiple highlight-worthy plays on both days of competition.
The victory earns Canes-Gallaher a spot in the DeMarini Wilson World Series in July of 2018. The team completed its fall season with five tournament championships in six events, including the Winter World Series and Beast of the East titles. Two of the other titles were 14U championships from events in which the Canes played up.
