CANES TO HOLD FALL TRYOUT AT PINE FOREST HIGH SCHOOL
 
Canes Baseball will be conducting a fall tryout for our 17U, 16U, and 15U teams on Sunday, August 22nd at 1:00pm. If you are interested in playing with the Canes in the fall of 2010 or in 2011, we strongly encourage you to attend this tryout.

CANES 2011 RHP DILLON MAPLES MAKES TEAM USA ROSTER
 
Canes 2011 RHP Dillon Maples has been selected to play for Team USA. Maples was selected from a pool of talented players from across the United States after 2 weeks of team trials at the USA Complex in Cary, NC. Canes Coach Doug Collins stated "Dillon is a very talented young man with a gift attached to his right shoulder. His fastball has been as high as 96mph and he has a big league curveball to go with it. Its an honor anytime you can represent your country and it couldnt have happen to a finer young man. We're very proud of Dillon and look forward to having him back with the Canes in the fall." Maples play high school baseball at Pinecrest High School under Head Coach Jeff Hewitt. The 16U Canes have gone back to back winning the 2010 WWBA 16U National
 
Championship in East Cobb, Georgia today with a 10-5 win over the Houston Banditos
 
in the semi-finals and a 10-4 win over the Carolina Cubs in the title game.

4 CANES NAMED TO AFLAC ALL AMERICAN GAME
 
July 7th - Four players from the North Canes have been selected as 2010 Aflac All Americans, and will repesent the Canes organization in San Diego, CA at The San Diego Padres Petco Park on August 15th. The Aflac All American Game willl be nationally televised. Jake Cave, Tyler Beede, Josh Tobias, and Dillon Maples have all been selected. Previously Ethan Carter, DeAndre Smelter, and Connor Narron were former Canes to play in this prestigous event.

SOUTH CANES 2011 RHP EVAN BEAL COMMITS TO GAMECOCKS
 
July 4th - South Canes right handed pitcher, and South County Secondary High School Product 2011 Graduate Evan Beal recently made a committment to The 2010 NCAA College World Series National Champion Gamecocks. Beal came onto the scene with an outstanding junior campaign for South County, and wasted no time becoming a household name among scouts when he made his Canes debut at the Firecracker Classic June 25th. Canes Coach Jeff Petty stated "Evan has a lights out breaking ball that has been consistently clocked above 80 MPH, and he has been able to touch 89 with his fastball. Evan has a very high cieling that he has no where close to have reached when it comes to his potential, and projection on the bump. His 6 ft 5 frame, and easy loose arm will be one for people to watch for years to come. You can see Beal with the Canes for the remainder of the summer, and fall 2010 seasons, and with the Gamecocks at the next level!

SOUTH CANES SOUTHPAW JEFF MAXWELL COMITTS TO RADFORD
 
July 4th - South Canes left hander, and Brookeville High School product Jeff Maxwell recently committed to The Radford Highlanders, and Head Coach Joe Raccuia. Canes Coach Jeff Petty stated" Jeff is a 2 year member of the Canes, and we have seen him make vast improvements along the way. He is a pitchability lefty that has great feel for the change-up, and can spin the breaking ball. Big time upside to this big bodied left hander, and we are looking forward to tracking his progress with the canes, and at the next level. Congrats Jeff!

5 FORMER CANES PACK BAGS FOR OMAHA
 
June 16th - The Clemson Tigers and the South Carolina Gamecocks are headed to the 2010 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Five former Canes have their bags packed.  Clemson's Will Lamb (pictured right) and Mike Kent, South Carolina's Richard Royal, Tyler Webb and Ethan Carter will be in Omaha next week gunning for an NCAA Championship. In the summer of 2008 Will Lamb, Ethan Carter, Mike Kent and Tyler Webb were all on the same North Canes team!  Good luck boys.

May 20th - Canes 17U was named the #2 preseason team in the US by Perfect Game.  Mt. Pleasant masher, Grayson Atwood, (Pictured left) and Kerr-Vance Academy stud, Cam Capell, (Pictured right) will be two of the stars on the 2011 Canes.  Capell just finished up with 16 homers in his high school season!

Thursday May 20th - Canes Baseball 16U Class is Ranked #4 in the United States amongst 200+ travel teams by Perfect Game yesterday. Canes 2012 Phenom Shortstop Landon Lassiter pictured left, and 2012 Canes RHP/1B Curt Britt pictured right just two of the players that you will see with this highly nationally ranked bunch.
 
 
 
SOUTH CANES TEE MCCONNELL COMMITS TO ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS
 
March 31st -South Canes Infielder, and Poquoson 3 sport star athlete Taylor McConnell recently made a verbal commitment to the Arizona State Sun Devils. The Sun Devils are currently ranked #1 in many polls in the country and are sporting a 23-0 record going into Oregon this weekend. Canes Coach Jeff Petty stated "Tee is one of the best all around athletes in Virginia. Tee is a very good player has a lot of the tools you are looking for in a prospect. He is a 6.8 to 6.7 runner, has sure hands and an accurate arm. The best thing he brings to the table is his stick. He plays a star role in Poquson's success.  They are currently ranked the #31 High School team in the US by PGCrosschecker and are the Defending Virginia AA State Champions. This is a great day for Taylor and the McConnell family getting the chance to go play in one of the top programs in the country.  It is also a great day for the Canes as we venture out to the west coast and form a relationship with a perennial power in ASU. Congrats Tee!

CANES TO ADD 12U TRAVEL TEAM IN FALL OF 2010
 
     The Canes Organization is pleased to announce the addition of a 12U Travel Team beginning in the Fall of 2010. North Carolina Director for Canes Operations Doug Collins stated "We are excited about bringing this younger group of players onboard. I think its very important that kids develop the proper skills at an early age and what better way to do it. We have 2 great coaches coming onboard that will be coaching this young group and I am looking forward to watching these kids progress through the program."
 
     Head Coach Darin Campbell was a High School All American at DeMatha High School in 1985. He was drafted out of high school in '85, but chose to attend The University of North Carolina on a baseball scholarship. He was a 3 year starter at SS/3B for the Tarheels from 1986-1988, drafted by the Cubs in 1987, and drafted and signed by the Indians in 1988.
 
     Assistant Coach Brandon Liles played at Garner High School and lettered in football and baseball from 1988-1991. He played college baseball at East Carolina University from 1991-1994 and then served as an assistant coach at Fuquay-Varina High School from 2000-2004, winning a State Championship in 2002.

SOUTH CANES 17U 2011 RHP PATRICK CORBETT TO RADFORD
 
Sunday February 14th, South Canes 17U RHP and Tabb High School 2011 graduate product Patrick Corbett recently made a verbal committment to the Highlanders at Radford University, and Head Coach Joe Raccuia. Canes South 17U Coach Jeff Petty stated "Patrick is a top notch RHP. He projects thru the cieling. 6 ft 5 long lanky frame, and very loose arm. Pat will be one of the many top notch arms we have on our South 17U team this summer. I got the liberty of riding to Atlanta last year with Pat to the 17U WWBA, and Pat's make up is off the charts good. What a great kid to be around. Sky is the limit for Pat. Congrats to Pat, and his family.
 
 
 
 
CANES & PINECREST PHENOM RHP DILLON MAPLES TO TARHEELS
 
January 12th - Canes 2011 RHP and Pinecrest High School product Dillon Maples is headed to the University of North Carolina! Maples was the World Wood Bat Association 16-Under Most Valuable Pitcher in 2009.  Maples showed he is one of the top arms in the United States. Maples also hurled the first no-hitter in WWBA Championship game history. Maples plays for Jeff Hewitt at Pinecrest High School which is one of the top high school programs in NC every year. Former Pinecrest, Canes and ECU star, Seth Maness, also hails from Pinecrest. Canes Coach Jeff Petty had this to say about Dillon "Maples has as much ability on the mound as you can possibly have at his age. His talents are truly special. Dillon is truly a blue-chip athlete in every sense and UNC is getting a good one. Maples is an outstanding person,  student and comes from a great family" Congrats Tim, Tracy, and Dillon from the Canes Family!
 
 
 
CANES 2012 INFIELDER MAX SCHROCK COMMITS TO GAMECOCKS
 
2012 Central Canes middle infielder and Cardinal Gibbons high school product Max Schrock recently made a verbal commitment to the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. Schrock will be playing with the Central Canes this year coached by Tim Lowery and Mike Myers. Canes GM Jeff Petty had this to say about Schrock "Max is one of the best hitters in our entire program. He has a short stroke and really does a great job hitting the baseball where it is pitched. He also has power and that is attributed to his very quick hands.  He generates so much  bat speed. We are very fortunate to have a guy like Max in our program and look forward to having him for 3 more years before he goes off to USC. Congrats to Max and the Schrock family"
 
 
CANES 2011 CATCHER MICHAEL ELEFANTE COMMITS TO ELON
 
Canes 2011 catcher and Chapel Hill High School product Michael Elefante recently made a commitment to Elon University. Canes Coach Jeff Petty stated "Michael has some tools that you simply can not teach. His arm strength from behind the plate is as good as it gets and he has some serious power when he runs into balls. With a couple more years under his belt, he is going to be a big time prospect. Elon is getting one of the best arms behind the plate in  all of NC class of 2011." Mike will be with the South Canes this summer playing for Coach Jeff Petty with a mixture of talent from NC and VA.
 
 
 
CANES STAR 2011 RHP TYLER BEEDE COMMITS TO VANDERBILT
 
December 8th - Auburn, MA native 2011 RHP and Canes product, Tyler Beede, recently made a verbal commitment to the Vanderbilt Commodores. Beede was a member of the 2009 North Canes 16U WWBA National Championship team and also pitched for the Canes in Jupiter, FL in October. Canes Coach Jeff Petty stated "Tyler is one of the premier pitchers in the country and picked Vanderbilt over a laundry list of other top programs. The thing that impressed me about Tyler is his makeup for someone with so much talent he has his head screwed on straight and is a very focused student/athlete. We are fired up that Ty will be with us all summer in 2010 to pitch on a staff that is pegged by many as the top pitching staff in the United States. Congrats to Ty and his family. Walter Beede, Ty's father, has been a pleasure to deal with in Ty's tenure with the Canes."
 
 
 
CANES 2011 STAR NICK THOMPSON COMMITS TO ECU PIRATES
 

Canes 2011 infielder/right handed pitcher and Western Branch High School product Nick Thompson recently made a verbal commitment to Billy Godwin and the East Carolina University Pirates. Nick plays his high school baseball for Head Coach Roland Wright. Thompson was a middle of the order presence in the the North Canes 2009 National Championship run and pitched in 2 big relief appearances in route to the World Wood Bat title in GA. Canes Coach Jeff Petty stated "Nick has been a corner stone of our program for the past 2 years. He is everything we look for in a student/athlete. He gets it done on the field in so many ways. He is a valuable pitcher in our program and a big bat with an outstanding approach at the plate. Nick has one of the most disciplined eyes at the plate I have seen in 20 years. He simply does not swing at bad pitches...EVER. He also brings a 4.0+ GPA to the table. He is a very hard worker in the classroom and a very smart kid. We wish Nick nothing but the best and look forward to his 3rd year with the Canes in 2010. Nick will be a hard one to say bye to next fall." CANES RHP DEANDRE SMELTER SIGNS WITH GEORGIA TECH
 
Canes right hander and Tatnall High School (Macon, GA) DeAndre Smelter recently signed a NLI with  Georgia Tech to play baseball for the Yellow Jackets in 2010. Smelter played in the Aflac All American Game this past summer at PETCO Park in San Diego, CA for the east squad. Smelter is considered by many as one of the top amateur pitchers in the United States, and is projected to be a very high pick in the MLB Amateur draft in June. Canes Coach Jeff Petty had this to say about Smelter "DeAndre is a gifted athlete. This kid could have done what ever he wanted to do in athletics. He could have gone to college to play football or basketball. He has lights out stuff on the mound with a power fastball that has been as high as 95 mph. The thing that most impressed our staff about DeAndre is what kind of a person he is.  One of the most respectful and hard nosed competitors we have been around. We wish DeAndre and his family nothing but the best moving forward!"

CANES 2011 MASHER JOSHUA TOBIAS COMMITS TO FLORIDA GATORS
 
August 16th - Southeast Guilford 2011 Infielder and Canes 16's product Joshua Tobias recently made a verbal commitment to the University of Florida Gators. Canes Coach Jeff Petty stated "Josh has a suit case full of tools and they play at the yard everyday. He can run, hit for average and has tons of power. Josh is one of the top hitters in our program's 5 year history. I would say he has Big League power right now! I respect Josh immensely because of the work he puts into the game on a regular basis.  After recently going 4 for 4 with 2 HR's in a game, he walked up to me and said, "Coach can I borrow both buckets of baseballs?  Me and my dad are gonna hit and I also need more groundballs." This is after the kid went 4 for 4 in 95 degree heat!  This kid is a winner and a huge piece of the puzzle in our National Championship run. You can see Tobias with the National Championship Canes for the next year and a half.  Congrats to Josh and his family."
 
 
 
2011 NORTH CANES JAKE CAVE COMMITS TO LSU TIGERS
 
July 22nd - Hampton Christian 2011 Product Left Handed Pitcher /Firstbaseman/Outfielder and North Hurricanes phenom, Jake Cave, recently made a verbal commitment to Head Coach Paul Maineri and the 2009 National Champions LSU Tigers. Canes Coach Jeff Petty states "I am very happy for Jake. He is one of the best players in the history of our program and is one of the top players in the country. I will go on record to say that he is an ever better kid than he is player.  He is a pleasure to be around and is as fierce a competitor you will find. He was a catalyst in our run to the World Wood Bat National Championship last week in East Cobb. Congrats on behalf of the entire Hurricane family."
