Tyler played his summer and fall baseball for the Canes North program where he displayed some of the quickest hands in the program, 6.8 sixty time and a strong left-handed bat with the ability to hit to all fields. Canes North coach Rob Younce had this to say about Tyler. "Gardner-Webb is getting a good one. I have coached Ty since he was 8 and he is a gamer. His jersey is always dirty.  He really gets after it.  Ty has been with the Canes for 3 years.  I couldn't be happier for Ty and his family"

CANES 2012 RHP NATE TRAUGH COMMITS TO UNC - CHARLOTTE

January 29, 2012 - Canes 2012 RHP and Riverbend HS (VA) product Nate Traugh has announced his verbal commitment to Head Coach Loren Hibbs and the 49ers of UNC-Charlotte. During the high school season, Nate plays for Canes Assistant Tim Stimmel. This past summer Nate played for the Canes North program and during the fall he toed the bump for the Delmarva program. Delmarva coach Dan Gitzen had this to say about Alex. "Nate's an extremley projectable right-handed pitcher who already has plus command of three pitches. At 6'5 and 200 lbs, scouts drool of the potential that Nate possesses to be a frontline starter capable of getting downhill with a heavy high 80's fastball. The best thing about Nate is he is a competitor. He already knows how to win at this level and with his continued development there is no doubt his success should carry over to the college game." Congratulations to Nate and his family on his commitment to UNC-Charlotte!

CANES 2012 RHP BOBBY MASON COMMITS TO CHOWAN

December 2011 - Canes 2012 RHP and Park View - Sterling HS (VA) product Bobby Mason has committed to Chowan University and Head Coach Taylor Furlough. Mason joined the Delmarva brand in the fall of 2011 and made an immediate impact with a mid-80's fastball, power curve and above average feel for his change-up. Mason showed why multiple schools showed interest by consistently producing low-pitch count outings with his ability to pound the strike zone and keep hitters off balance. Delmarva Coach Dan Gitzen had this to say about Bobby. "Bobby is an example of a very polished pitcher who's physical and arm strength is far from being at it's peak. He has a clean easy arm action which screams velocity jump in the coming years. When you combine that with his pitchability Chowan is getting a potential front of the rotation starter. Bobby comes from a great baseball family and there is no doubt he has the drive and support to do great things at Chowan." Congratulations to Bobby and his family on his commitment to Chowan University!

CANES 2012 OF/RHP SAMUEL WARREN COMMITS

TO BATES COLLEGE

November 2011 - Canes OF/RHP and Maury HS (VA) product Sam Warren has committed to Bates College and Head Coach Mike Leonard. As a OF/RHP who split time between the South 2012, 2013 and Delmarva 2012 programs, San flashed excellent foot speed, a mid-80's arm off the bump and the versatility in his offensive game that makes it easy to plug him in anywhere in the line-up from 1 - 9. Delmarva Canes Coach Dan Gitzen had this to say about Sam. "I got an opportunity to have Sam play with us a couple times this fall and was instantly impressed with both his tools but his make-up. He is an intense competitor who is always looking for the opportunity to make things happened with a game that will help him and his team come out on top. Sam no doubt has the tools to be a D1 outfielder but I believe he made a very mature decision by choosing a school that is not only a great fit for him athletically but also academically" Congratulations to Sam and his family on his commitment to Bates College.

CANES 2012 RHP PATRICK BAKER TO JMU DUKES

Canes 2012 RHP Patrick Baker has committed to the Dukes of James Madison University and Head Coach Spanky McFarland. Patrick played predominately for the Delmarva Canes program during the summer of 2011. As a lynch pin of a talented pitching staff, Patrick found his niche sharing the closer role. It was here that Patrick dominated opponents with a developing power breaker and a low 90's fastball. Delmarva Head Coach Dan Gitzen had this to say about Patrick. "Patrick Baker is just another example about how deep the talent level is here in the Canes baseball program. He's a guy who is just 18-months into his progression as a pitcher but has shown the potential to be a big-time arm at the next level. Because of his athleticism and raw ability it's no surprise that he's making a commitment to a great program such as JMU." We'd like to congratulate Patrick and his family on his commitment to JMU.

CANES 2013 LHP AJ PUK COMMITS TO FLORIDA

December 1Canes 2013 LHP AJ Puk announced his commitment to play for Kevin OSullivans national powerhouse and 2011 College World Series runner up, Florida Gators.  AJ plays for the Canes 2013 North squad.  Canes 2013 North Pitching Coach Brian Barnes had this to say about AJ. AJ may have been one of the best kept secrets in the country.  AJ runs his fastball up to 88-89 mph with pinpoint control of all his pitches which is attributed to his easy, fluid delivery to go along with his 6-5 frame.  It is easy to say that AJ is one of the, if not, the top lefty in our program.  AJ is a kid that will have no problems succeeding at the next level with his tremendous work ethic, attitude, and poise on the mound.  Not only is AJ impressive on the field, but the fact that he hails from Cedar Rapids Iowa and puts in countless hours on an airplane each weekend is a true testament to the entire Puk family for their ultimate sacrifice to ensure their son had the best opportunity to play and been seen by the handfuls of scouts that flocked in to watch AJ each weekend.  Simply put, AJ Puk is a WINNER.

CANES NORTH 2013 OF JAKE FRALEY TO LSU TIGERS

Fraley is the 2nd Cane named Jake to commit to LSU in the past 2 years. Former Canes star Jake Cave committed to the Tigers but opted to sign with the NY Yankees in the 2011 draft. Canes Coach Jeff Petty stated "Jake is the real deal in every phase of the game. Fraley is one of the top left handed 2013 bats in the country. He had his pick where he could go to school and chose LSU over several other top tier programs. When Jake comes to the plate you just have that feeling he is going to make something happen and he wreaks havoc on the base paths. Very dependable outfielder, with a good arm and, most importantly, he loves to play the game. He is a baseball rat, a tireless worker, a outstanding teammate and an even better person. I am excited for Jake and this opportunity he will have at LSU.  He is going to turn a lot of heads leading up to the 2012 Amateur Draft." You can see Jake with Canes Baseball in all of 2012.

He has shown that he is a good defensive outfielder with a good throwing arm and has some big power  at the plate. I personally believe that Porter's best baseball is in front of him. He has juggled an awful lot in his prep career and has put up some pretty impressive numbers. As he matures physically and plays more baseball, he is going to turn into something pretty special on the diamond. Very high ceiling for Porter."

Michael is the first Cane to commit to the MEAC powerhouse Wildcats which have won six consecutive MEAC Championships. Michael spent his summer and fall playing with the Delmarva Canes and Coach Dan Gitzen had this to say about Michael. " Michael Austin may have the highest ceiling of any of the player in the Delmarva program. He is a young 2012 grad who already stands at 6'4 and has a wingspan that projects much more growth in his frame. Add that to the fact that he has plus power, good range, and a strong arm and you are looking at a guy that we could definitely see playing beyond his years at B-C." Congratulations to Michael and his family on his commitment to Bethune-Cookman!

"Lee was a belssing to us this fall as he was able to fill several needs for our club. He has a huge upside behind the dish as he brigs superior athleticism to the catching position and an very good arm. I think Rider is getting a very good ballplayer who's best baseball years are yet to come!" The Canes would like to congratulate Lee and his family on his commitment to Rider University.

Vance is the second Cane to commit to the Volunteers in the 2012 class. Even though Vance is from Wake Forest, NC he spent his summers and fall playing with the Delmarva Canes 2012 program. Delmarva coach Dan Gitzen had this to say about Vance. "In mid-May we had an opportunity to add Vance to our roster and the saying better late then never has never been more true than with our addition of Vance. He stepped right in and gave us depth up the middle being able to play SS and 2B, but it was at 3rd that college coaches really loved Vance. He has advanced actions, a strong arm and the makings of a real power bat at the next level. The best part is that he has barely even begun to scratch the surface of his potential!!" Congratulations to Vance and his family on his commitment to Tennessee.

CANES 2012 INF/RHP NICK DEFRANK TO MAINE

Canes 2012 INF/RHP Nick Defrank has committed to the Black Bears of Maine University. Nick came to us this fall and made an immediate impact for the Delmarva Canes program. The versatility he showed being able to play all 3 infield positions and pitch showed quickly why Maine and other programs sought out the services of Nick. Delmarva Canes head coach Dan Gitzen had this to say about Nick. "I first had an opportunity to coach Nick last year at the WWBA Underclass Championships in FL and he had an absolutely unbeleivable tournament. I knew right then that he was one of thoise players that truly plays bigger then his frame. Not only is he a valuable switch hitting commodaty but his defensive skills are top notch. Maine is getting a steal in Nick Defrank!" Congratulations to Nick and his family on his commitment to Maine.

Robbie is a polished base runner with great instincts, along with being a high level defensive outfielder. He's a solid left handed hitter that seems to always be on base, causing havoc on opposing defenses. " Congratulations to Robbie and his family. You can see Thorburn with the Canes the remainder of the fall and again in 2012.

During the high school season, Alex plays for Mark Gibbs and the prestigious St. John's Cadets baseball program. During the summer Alex played for the Canes North program and during the fall he toes the bump for the Delmarva program. Delmarva coach Dan Gitzen had this to say about Alex. "In the spring, I saw Alex throw probably more than any kid in this program and in watching him you just knew that he was destined to play at a very high level. He has a great feel for pitching to go with a developing physical frame. His 3 pitch mix is very advanced for his age, but what is more impressive, is that Alex isn't even close to reaching his physical peak. Great things are on the horizon for this southpaw!" You can see Alex with the Canes program this fall and in Jupiter.

One of Xavier's biggest assets is his versatility.  He has a great glove at 3B  and is a front line defender in the outfield.  Bottomline, though...he can rake. Outstanding player and person." You can see Xavier with the Canes the rest of the fall, including Jupiter in October.

CANES C DAVID HOUSER TO TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS

South Canes 2012 catcher David Houser has committed to the Tennessee Volunteers.  Houser has been with the Canes for 2 years now and was heavily recruited by several top tier programs. Canes GM Jeff Petty stated "David is one of the top catch and throw guys in the country. When he was in the 9th grade he was delivering balls on the bag at a 1.8.  We even had him at a sub 1.8 pop time in the game. He has truly been one of country's elite amateur players the past 3 years. At the plate, he has power, from both sides of the plate. One of David's many highlights with the Canes was his solo bomb at the 16U WWB semi's to tie the game in the 7th against the Houston Banditos. That was probably the most exciting baseball game I have ever been a part of. David is an outsanding student/athlete as well as a person and I wish him nothing but the best at Tennessee!"  Congrats to David and the entire Houser family.

CANES 2013 RHP ALEC BETTINGER COMMITS TO UVA

Canes Coach Jeff Petty stated "Alec came to a tryout in November of his freshman year of high school and he was the talk of the tryout. I remember leaving the tryout thinking he was going to be something special and that has held true. Alec had an outstanding summer.  In 12 appearances this summer, I only remember 1 outing where Alec didn't dominate. This summer, he has consistently had command of 3 pitches on both.  At times, he has been able to hold velocity in the upper 80's with his fastball, touching low 90's.   Alec has such a high ceiling.  He is hungry to get better and he loves to compete!" You can see Alec with the Canes this fall and next summer!

He has so much ability.  He is a great guy to have on your team and plays all out...all the time. Josh has a good relationship with God and it shows in how he leads his life on and off the field. It will be tough to see him go after this fall. It has been nothing but a pleasure." You can see Josh with the Canes this fall, including Jupiter at the end of October.

The combination of competing in National Exposure tournaments with the Canes along with a few feature stories by Kendall Rogers (Perfect Game) vaulted him onto the national scene. His decision to be a Gamecock was based on the relationship he formed with Coach Chad Holbrook and the phenominal things the Gamecocks are doing in the worl of college baseball. We are excited for Jamie and his family and super proud to have had an opportunity to coach him this summer and look forward to great things from him in the future." Strain's ability to pound the strike zone with a 3 pitch mix makes him extremely effective out of the bullpen or in a starter's role. The best part about Joey is that he hasn't even scratched the surface of his potential and he's already has a winner's mentality that should carry him onto great things." CANES 2012 RHP PATRICK PHILLIPS COMMITS TO OLD DOMINION

August 11, 2011 - Steward School 2012 RHP, Patrick Phillips has made a verbal commitment to the Old Dominion University. Patrick is 10th player from the Delmarva Canes 2012 team to commit to a Division 1 program this year. Coach Dan Gitzen had this to say about Patrick," Patrick Phillips has been one of the most steadily improved players in our rotation. His hard work is evident from the steady improvement in his performance throughout the summer. His velocity has risen into the high 80's, and with how heavy his ball is with downward action, it makes it very hard to square up balls off Patrick. However most exciting to me is the fact that Patrick is extremely projectable at 6'6, 225 and he will work extremely hard to reach his full potential." The Canes program would like to congratulate Patrick on his commitment to ODU. You can see Patrick throwing this fall with the Delmarva Canes 2012 program.

Outstanding tools, and a lot of fun to watch play.  He hasn't even scratched the surface of what he is going to be."  Congratulations to DJ and his family.  You can see DJ with the Canes South 2014 the rest of this summer and in the fall.

Delmarva Canes Head Coach, Dan Gitzen, stated "Brandon has quickly vaulted his way into the ranks as one of the top 2012 pitchers in our program and easily one of the best in the state of MD. His poise on the mound had as much to do with his high level of recruitment as his high, 80's fastball, 6'6 frame or pension for working out of tough situations. Brandon is a kid who calmly approaches each situation with with a game plan which has shown he has the mental and physical make-up to be a big time pitcher at the next level." Over the past 3 years of knowing Shane I can say without a doubt that Shane is one of the most intense competitors I have ever met and an even better human being. Not only is Shane a RHP with an upper 80's fastball, cutter, and slider combo, but he is a power hitting corner inf/of. Saint Joe's is getting an absolute steal in Shane!"

He pounds the zone with a high 80s fastball, quality slider and plus feel for his change-up. He was a key component of JM Bennett's state title team and has cemented himself as one of the top arms in our program." Congrats to Trey and his family. We are happy for Brandon and the Lowe family!"

His velocity has been as high as 90 but he usually works in the upper 80's with his fastball.  He has a sharp  12 to 6 breaking ball. Evan is very young for his graduation class and has plenty of room to fill out.  Phillips has a very bright future ahead of him in baseball and he is an even better person." The best is ahead of Kyle and I feel he made a great choice in choosing Coach Erik Bakich and the Terps. He will get better there and he will be a part of something special. Kyle is a toolsy player - he has power at the plate, a plus throwing arm and he can really, really run. Special player and an even better person. We are happy for Kyle and his family!"

CANES 2012 INF CONNOR HENDERSON TO WILLIAM & MARY

July 18, 2011 - North Canes 2012 INF, Connor Henderson, committed to the Coach Frank Leoni's William and Mary Tribe.  Connor has been heavily recruited and felt very comfortable with W&M.  Canes Coach, Rob Younce, said "First and foremost, Connor is a good kid with great make up.  He has always been a middle of the order presence for our teams.  He has been a relentless worker and always does whatever we ask.  He has the ability to hit for average and has a lot of pop.  His arm strength and glove can keep him on the left side of the field but he is also capable of holding down first base.  He is a great student so William and Mary made a lot of sense."  Canes GM, Jeff Petty, said "Connor has been with us for 3 years.  He has the build and tools to play as long as he wants.  We are excited to have our first William and Mary commit.  We expect big things out of Connor in his years in Williamsburg.  Congrats!"

CANES 2012 LHP BROCK HUNTER TO COASTAL CAROLINA

July 17, 2011 - McLean High School product and North Canes 2012 LHP, Brock Hunter, verbally accepted a scholarship to Coastal Carolina. Hunter was receiving interest from many top flight programs, but Coastal grabbed Brock's attention. Brock plays for McLean Head Coach John Thomas, who is also his summer coach with The Canes. Canes GM Jeff Petty stated "Brock is a 3 pitch lefty. His velocity is nowhere near where its going to be in 3 years. He has a very high ceiling. His  command of his secondary stuff will allow him to come in and get college hitters out right away. We are excited for Hunter and Coastal.  Hunter is headed to a perennial top 20 college baseball program."  Brock follows is the footsteps of former Canes stars, LHP Cody Wheeler (now with the Arizona Diamondbacks) and incoming freshman RHP/INF Patrick Corbett to Conway, SC.

CANES 2013 RHP CONNOR JONES TO UVA CAVALIERS

July 7, 2011 - North Canes 2013 RHP, Connor Jones, committed to the Virginia Cavaliers last night. UVA Coach Karl Kuhn saw Jones again at the Dynamic Best of The East Showcase at Wake Forest University and it sealed the deal.  Canes GM and North 2013 Head Coach Jeff Petty stated "Connor is a big time talent. He is a big game pitcher with command of 3 pitches. Connor has been getting a lot of guidance from Jamie Evans the past 12 months and he has busted his tail to be in this position. Hard work pays off and Connor is a worker. What is even more impressive to me is how great a kid Connor is and what a pleasure he is to be around. Great things are to come from this RHP. Keep your eyes on him as he continues to develop over the rest of his prep career." Jones will be attending the 17U and 16U WWBA in GA.
